The word Sungudi originates from two Tamil words: “Sung”, meaning dye, and “Kadi”, meaning tie or knot. When these two words came together, they evolved into Sungadi and eventually became known as Sungudi. True to its name, Sungudi refers to fabrics created through the traditional tie-and-dye process.
Rooted deeply in the cultural heritage of Madurai, Sungudi has long been celebrated as a classic cotton saree that reflects tradition, elegance, and authenticity. Loved and cherished across generations, Sungudi sarees are admired for their vibrant colors and artistic patterns. They are commonly worn during festivals, temple visits, and other auspicious occasions, as many believe that wearing Sungudi brings a sense of peace, harmony, and refined grace.
Breaking Tradition, Creating a Revolution
For years, Sungudi remained closely associated with women’s attire. But a revolutionary thought emerged — why should Sungudi be limited only to sarees? Why can’t men wear Sungudi too?
Driven by this bold vision, Prabanja Sungudi made history by becoming the first brand in the world to introduce the “Sungudi Shirt.” This innovative step redefined tradition while honoring its roots. Interestingly, even the traditional Sungudi saree artisans, who have practiced this craft for generations, welcomed the idea with excitement and admiration.
The look and feel of these Sungudi shirts (Tie & dye Design Shirts ) resemble printed fabrics and shirts commonly seen in Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, where original hand-printed textile shirts are sold at prices ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 (Indian currency). However, these Sungudi shirts stand apart because they are crafted from authentic, hand-dyed Sungudi fabric — not machine prints.
Tradition Made Affordable for Everyone
With a strong belief that our own people should have access to our own heritage, Mr. Paramesh Kumar, Managing Director of Prabanja, envisioned making Sungudi shirts affordable and accessible to all. His mission was clear: traditional art should not be a luxury – it should be worn, lived, and celebrated by everyone.
When worn in public spaces, Sungudi shirts make a powerful statement of individuality and cultural pride. The fabric is exceptionally lightweight, breathable and comfortable, making it ideal for everyday wear.

Every Shirt Tells a Story of Livelihood
Most importantly, purchasing a Sungudi shirt goes far beyond fashion. Each shirt supports:
• Cotton fabric weavers and their families
• Dyeing artisans working in traditional dyeing units
• Skilled tailors who bring the garment to life
Every purchase becomes a source of livelihood for multiple families. In essence, buying a Sungudi shirt means indirectly supporting and uplifting an entire artisan ecosystem.
With this noble vision, Prabanja Sungudi, under the leadership of Mr. Paramesh Kumar, invites everyone to wear Sungudi with pride — not just as a garment, but as a movement that preserves tradition, empowers workers, and sustains livelihoods.
